In 2016 I completed my Bachelor’s Degree in both English Writing and English Literature from Millikin University. During my four years, I not only gained knowledge, experience and confidence in the field of writing through my classes, I also learned valuable lessons through my various on campus positions. I am confident that I have the skills and experiences suitable for your job requirements. While attending Millikin University I worked closely with campus newspaper The Decaturian, sometimes simultaneously wearing the hat of writer, editor, and layout designer. Writing weekly pieces, while never limiting myself to one section, I wrote articles that ranged from opinion pieces to current events. For my final project for the paper, I conceived, wrote, and designed the layout for a seven-part series on the mindset of an injured Division III athlete. The weekly assignment required extensive research and interviews, with specific topics in mind. Each article explored a different part of the human mindset, and each story an athlete told shed light onto the dedication it took to remain a part of their team. Through this final project, I refined my skills as a writer and with each interview I cemented my role as a storyteller. Additionally, for two years I participated in Bronze Man Books Publishing Company, located on campus. Within this unique class, I not only learned about the publishing industry, I was a part of it. In the last ten years, Bronze Man Books has professionally published more than a dozen books, ranging from children’s books, poetry shorts, plays and more. The company is run by students, each participant is expected to become hands-on, learning and fulfilling tasks that are required to take a book from concept to production, as well as marketing and selling. One project that is currently in production at Bronze Man is Gluten Free Bong Water, a modern-day poetry book by Ian Malone. The collection of witty poems will be published as an e-book, available on Amazon. I was the first lead editor to take the poetry and start the process to production. Gluten Free Bong Water will be Bronze Man’s first publication with an author who is not directly related to Millikin University. I was not only an editor at Bronze Man, but I also took on the role of Director of Marketing within the company as well. This required a jump out of my comfort zone as I learned the influence that social media has over the ability to sell a book, or gain followers for our company. Along with marketing our published works, I was required to plan, market, and execute events that were instrumental for gaining recognition and participants for the class and company. Along with working toward my double degree, I was Vice President of Facility Operations of the sorority Alpha Chi Omega. My duties involved being a liaison among the residents as well as the House Director and the Housing Corporation. I was required to know and execute all safety procedures at least once a month to prepare the residents for an emergency situation. As “House Manager” it was my job to make sure that the residence ran without major technical incidents. My experience and skills gained at Millikin extend beyond the classroom. Through my job as a vendor at M&J Vending and Administrative Assistant at Northwestern Mutual I refined my skills to communicate and problem solve as situations occur within the workplace. Recently, I was promoted to Contract and Licensing Coordinator within Northwestern Mutual where I love guiding new employees through the application process. These last two years of work experience outside the classroom have taught me to think on my feet, as situations arise quickly. While these last two years have taken me away from my profession as a writer, I still make it a point to exercise my skills by continuing to write on a personal level. I am looking to expand on my base and start building a professional portfolio, and can juggle many projects at once. My inexperience in the professional world of writing does not define my skills as a writer. I admit that I still have much to learn within the world of writing and editing, but I will learn quickly.
